Overwhelmed by happy eyes

Kerstin Gebhardt (Aminata) on her annual visit

Our head of association, Kerstin Gebhardt, is currently in The Gambia looking after our projects. Of course, she doesn't manage to visit all our projects. There are simply too many of them. But the last gardens we handed over were a must. Sahadatou and Kunjata are a feast for the eyes. The women work so hard, but soon they will be able to reap the rewards.

In Kunjata, the water basins and the water tower including the solar panel are currently being built. This is happening at what feels like 40° and without any major mechanical aids. Kerstin was always surprised by their efforts. This shows how important the support for the gardens is. Because the living situation has not improved, but rather worsened. Everything is overpriced and people can afford less and less. So the gardens are very welcome.

A visit to our school in Sanjang and another school in Kersering was on the agenda. The school in Sanjang has a new principal. Of course, various requests were made to us. However, the school is solid, has trained teachers so that they receive their wages from the state and has a great school garden. We had never been to the school in Kersering before. The teacher is very hard-working and active. However, the school receives no further support from the state. Only one Czech woman tries to help where she can, but the material possibilities are limited. On this day there was a tooth brushing campaign. Some of the children were holding a toothbrush for the first time. Thanks to Dr. Friedrich for donating the brushes, toothpaste and rinse. Until now, cleaning was done with a stick. You often see older people with a stick in their mouth. They chew on it and from time to time they pick it up and scrub their teeth.

I also bought exercise books for the children. That wasn't so easy. But I found what I was looking for and bought the store empty. Another happy store owner with sales.

Of course, not everything can always go smoothly. We received bad news from Jinack Island. The pump is no longer pumping enough water upwards. The pump is probably too small after all. Our specialist advised us to do this as the plot is not too big. This assessment was wrong and we're now paying the price. The women are almost desperate. We have to take action and consider what the best alternative is. We alternate between feelings of happiness and despair. But anyone can do it.
