School Garden Sanyang (West Coast, Kombo South District)

  • Start of construction in 2014

  • Area of 500 m²

  • School garden is located directly at an Islamic school

  • Building a wall (made of 7800 stones = 260 bags of cement, 7 trucks of sand) for the school grounds including gate

  • 23 bananas, 13 oranges, 8 papayas were planted

  • First we were able to connect to the school's water supply

  • May 2015: Construction of a tool shed

  • February 2016: Construction of 3 toilets and purchase of school furniture and doors for everyone with funding from a classroom  foundation

  • Autumn 2016: the teachers' salaries can be financed by selling fruit and vegetables (all year round).

  • Autumn 2017: Construction of two classrooms from natural materials (own initiative) for the youngest

  • Autumn 2018: The shell of two new classrooms is in place, school furniture has been ordered

  • Spring 2019: Construction of a kitchen, crockery and pots (is a prerequisite for participation in the state-funded food program)

  • Winter 2019: existing well collapsed due to poor quality, new well was built (6 meters deep)

  • 2021: 350 pupils visit the school regulary

Kitty Compound Project (West Coast District)

  • Start of construction in spring 2014

  • Construction of solid wall and laying of water pipes

  • Growing fruits and vegetables (selling harvested fruits and vegetables allows the family to afford breakfast for the first time)

  • Garden serves as a sample garden for the unbelieving villagers to imitate

  • Winter 2015, handover to the Saidy family

Well construction No Kunda (North Bank)

  • Start of construction in May 2016

  • Fountain construction completed for entire village

  • Gambian cook from Berlin had the dream of having a well built for his home village

  • Hand in Hand took over all the work to dig the well, installed the borehole, the pump and the solar cells

Kitty (West Coast District)

  • Start of construction spring 2016

  • Area 2 hectares

  • 550 wooden stakes made of termite-resistant wood and necessary barbed wire (which turned out to be of poor quality)

  • Construction of well (17m deep) including a pump, solar panels and 7 pools of water

  • Use of drip irrigation, not ideal because hoses were often chopped up

  • November 2016:  the families receive flower beds and an orange tree to care for

  • 120 orange trees and 10 lime trees from Senegal were planted

  • Spring 2017: Construction of a tool shed

  • March 2018: Completion of toilets

  • August 2019: first harvest from our orange trees

  • April 2020: a new borehole is needed, 30 meters deep (big thanks to all villagers of Rathenow)

  • Spring 2022: 58 sacks of oranges were harvested in Kitty 1 = €540

Sutukoba (North Bank, Lower District)

  • Start of construction in autumn 2016

  • Joint realization of the project with Kerstin Strian

  • Area 2000 m²

  • Metal fence and fountain completed in October 2017

  • Cultivation of rice and findo

  • Winter 2018: handover to the villagers

School in Rumba (West Coast District)

  • First contact November 2016

  • 3 classrooms were already available, school made a very neat impression

  • Number of students: 150 in February 2017

  • European supporters withdrew assostance in 2014

  • The number of students increased enormously, the 3 classrooms were no longer sufficient, teaching was carried out in two shifts

  • November 2016: Construction of 3 toilets

  • March 2017: Construction of a school wall (before that, a wild path led through the school grounds)

  • October 2017: Completion of the bricks for the new school building for 3 new classrooms

  • School garden (to finance part of the teachers' salaries) in planning with a well already in place

  • March 2018: The shell is complete

  • School furniture was made in The Gambia

  • 2023: 450 students will be taught

Kitty 2 (West Coast District)

  • Start of construction in winter 2017

  • Area 2 hectares

  • Fencing work completed

  • Spring 2018: Well construction and borehole including pump, solar panels and water tank and corresponding water basin completed

  • October 2018: Handover of the beds to the families

  • 100 donated orange trees from Senegal were planted

Cable (West Coast Region)

  • Start of construction in spring 2018

  • Area 3.5 hectares

  • 6 wells (8 meters deep, has enough water) and 2 water basins already existed

  • Some of the fence had to be repaired

  • The area resembled a jungle and had to be cleared first. The biggest problem were the men, they preferred to lie under the mango tree. After many fruitless discussions we withdrew from the project.

Faraba Banta (West Coast Region, Kombo East District)

  • Start of construction 2018

  • 4000 inhabitants

  • Area 200 x 115 m

  • Initiator of project was a Dutch couple with husband being Gambian

  • Hand in Hand took care of the organizational aspects and brought the materials on site, as well as supervising the construction

  • Wooden fence (termite-resistant wood from Senegal) procts the the property

  • Borehole (20 meters deep), water basin, water tower and solar panels

  • January 2019: Handover of the beds to the families

Faraba Kairaba (West Coast Region)

  • Start of construction autumn 2018

  • Area 3.7 hectares

  • February 2019: Borehole (26 meters deep)

  • Metal fence (pasture fence comes from Germany; unfortunately, termite-resistant fences don't last long and we also want to counteract deforestation, for environmental reasons), water basin, water tower and solar panels, toilets

  • December 2020: Completion of all necessary works and distribution of the areas to the families. Each family got an orange tree to care for

Kayal (North Bank)

  • Start of construction in spring 2019

  • Borehole with 4 water extraction points (28 meters deep)

  • Winter 2020: Work starts on the desired Frauengarten

  • 2.5 hectares

  • Water tank, pump, solar panels and the necessary water basins were installed

  • Area was divided among the families, each family received an orange tree to care for

  • Summer 2021: the garden was handed over

  • December 2022: emergency call - pump does not work, villagers have called a self-proclaimed specialist who ended up destroying the pump completely. Therefore, they had to source a new pump with their own rsources.

Kolior (North Bank, Kiang East District)

  • Start of construction spring 2020

  • in 2012 the existing garden was completely destroyed by bush fires with an area of 120 x 150 meters being lost to the villagers

  • Metal fence, 4 wells (6 meters deep), we decided against a borehole because of the shallow depth and because the garden is outside the village and therefore there is no security against theft

  • Winter 2020: Handover to the villagers

Kerr Mama School (Northbank, neighboring village of Kayal)

  • Start of construction in spring 2020

  • School was completely destroyed by storm and fire, school density in this region is very low

  • In cooperation with a Dutch foundation, a Dutch-Gambian couple and us, the school was rebuilt from ground

  • 3 classrooms (including school furniture from Gambia), toilet, school kitchen and school garden were added

  • Bricks for the school were made using their own skills and initiative

Sahadatou (North Bank, Upper River Region)

  • First contact: December 2020

  • Area: 5 hectares of land for 3 adjacent villages

  • January 2021: Borehole 35 meters deep

  • December 2021: Fenced area, water basin, pipes laid, pump installed and a water tower constructed

  • Christmas 2021: handover to the villagers; Each family receives an orange tree to care for.

Sittanunku (North Bank)

  • First contact: February 2021

  • Area: 4 hectares

  • Borehole dug into 35 meters depth

  • May 2022: Fencing of the site

  • Autumn 2022: water basin, pump, solar panels, pipe to the water basin laid

  • Christmas 2022: Solemn ceremony of handing over the garden to the villagers. Each family receives an orange tree to care for.
